Why Google’s Cloud Spanner is the super best in the both relational and non-relational worlds ?

Dear Cloud Community, this week let’s try answering the question Why Google’s Cloud Spanner is the super best in the both relational and non-relational worlds ?

In the theme of public clouds war era, I know few of our friends keep up with the announcements, but I mean, I get announcement every day about a new product and service. And the Cloud Spanner is great, but the reality is lot of customers are not willing or ready to move to which is light years ahead. I meant, please do recall the statement from former Hadoop co-creator, he said Google’s living a few years in the future and sending us messages, right? Thumbs up to Google Team, we are listening to your messages.

Cloud Spanner is Google’s highly available global-scale distributed database. It provides strong consistency for all transactions. This combination of availability and consistency over the wide area is generally considered impossible due to the CAP Theorem. The TrueTime, which is Google’s globally synchronized clock, plays a very vital role in consistency for reads and especially for snapshots that enable consistent and repeatable analytics.

Three motivation behind the Cloud Spanner are Horizontally scaling database, ACID Transaction with global consistency, and No downtime.

Cloud Spanner is globally distributed NewSQL database, which is not a pure relational database system because each table must have a primary key column. Spanner is used internally within Google’s infrastructure and as part of the Google Cloud Platform. It uses the Paxos algorithm to shard data across hundreds of datacenters as part of its operation.

It uses and leverages the hardware-assisted time synchronization using GPS clocks and atomic clocks to ensure global consistency. The Google F1 SQL database management system is built on top of Spanner.

Confused with multiple products and services from Google Cloud Platform, no worries below flow with help us to pick the Cloud Spanner for the right business and technical use case.
